Immigration Equality Joins Calls for Justice in Ahmaud Arbery Killing

New York, NY (May 20, 2020) — In response to the deadly shooting of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black man killed by civilians in Georgia in February, Immigration Equality issued the following statement: 

“We are deeply saddened by the heinous killing of Ahmaud Arbery, and we admonish the justice system for failing to arrest the men responsible for over two months.  

“We join the many organizations calling for an end to impunity for perpetrators of these crimes and for the repeal of laws that enable this dangerous pattern. We are committed to doing our part to prevent future abuses by white supremacists. We also recognize this case is just the tip of the iceberg of tragic killings of people of color, including the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor by police in her apartment in Kentucky in March.  

“The dehumanization of black and brown people in the U.S. is deeply personal for the Immigration Equality family. The vast majority of the people we represent are queer and transgender immigrants of color. We advocate for their protection, not just from persecution in their countries of origin, but from the same strain of hatred and injustice that took Ahmaud Arbery’s life.”
