LGBTQ Groups to Congress and President Biden: Don’t Sell Out LGBTQ Asylum Seekers

A group of Senators, with the support of the White House, is negotiating a deal to pass funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan in exchange for extreme, permanent changes to U.S. immigration and asylum law that would harm LGBTQ refugees. The proposed trade-offs would destroy life-saving protections for people seeking safety and increase chaos at the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as expand fast-track deportations of immigrants in the U.S.
In response, Immigration Equality led a coalition of the nation’s leading LGBTQ and immigrants’ rights organizations, including Human Rights Campaign, The National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund, GLAAD, Lambda Legal, National Center for Transgender Equality, Transgender Law Center, and Outright International in drafting a letter to President Biden and Congress cautioning them against trading protections for LGBTQ immigrants in exchange for a one-time spending bill.
