Alert: Annual Fees For Asylum, WoR and CAT Applications

This is a practice alert as your client may be required to pay a fee for their pending application for asylum, withholding of removal and for protection under the Convention Against Torture in light of recent legislation. These new fees are for: initial applications and for applications that have been pending for more than one year, including those in the asylum backlog.

    USCIS Registration Requirement

This is a practice alert to help you determine whether your client is already considered to be registered with USCIS in light of the recent registration requirement, which went into effect on April 11, 2025.

Attorneys, Advise Your Clients of Their Rights

We have received questions from our pro bono partners on how to advise and best protect their clients in the wake of increased ICE enforcement. In response to these questions, we will continue to update the Know Your Rights page on our website. However, here are a few important suggestions that you should communicate with your clients and other concerned community members.

Practice Advisories

Pretermission Web Advisory for Pro Bono Attorneys

This resource provides an overview of recent policy changes from the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) regarding the potential dismissal—or “pretermission”—of certain asylum applications without a hearing. The advisory outlines what this means for people in defensive removal proceedings and provides guidance—especially for pro bono attorneys—on how to ensure applications include enough specific detail to move forward. It includes action steps, relevant links, and recommendations for updating or amending filings as needed.

This handbook is intended for use by pro bono attorneys and immigration attorneys working on LGBTQ/HIV asylum cases.
