Sign Now: Tell Congress to Oppose Extension of Anti-Asylum Policy

Right now, members of Congress are moving legislation forward that would extend a policy denying asylum seekers, including LGBTQ and HIV-positive individuals, their right to ask for protection at the U.S.-Mexico border. Please sign the petition calling on Congress to oppose the extension of use of Title 42 to expel asylum seekers.

Full petition:

To the Members of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives:

We call on you to oppose any legislation that would keep Title 42 expulsions in place. The policy cruelly denies asylum seekers, including LGBTQ and HIV-positive individuals, their right to ask for protection at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Trump and Biden administrations have wielded Title 42, a sham public health law, against migrants and asylum seekers roughly two million times over the course of the last two years. According to Human Rights First, those returned to Mexico have faced at least 10,000 incidences of kidnapping, rape, and assault.

Every day that Title 42 continues, queer refugees will suffer. LGBTQ individuals are particularly vulnerable in Mexico, and if they are expelled to their countries of origin, this means facing persecution, torture, or death.

Asylum seekers have a right to come to the U.S. to ask for safety, and it is our nation’s moral obligation to respect that right. We urge you to protect asylum and advocate against any legislative effort to extend Title 42 expulsions.

Respectfully,
