Development Internship

Immigration Equality is proud to be the national leader in the field we pioneered: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-positive immigrant rights. We helped end the HIV travel ban, led the successful fight to secure green cards for LGBTQ families, and represent LGBTQ asylum seekers and detainees every day.

Founded in 1994, Immigration Equality has a dual focus of direct representation and policy work. We take calls every day from clients who need help right now and we work to change the systems that have lasting impact on how LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants get treated. We work with LGBTQ and HIV-positive asylum seekers and detainees, answering more than 4,000 hotline calls and representing more than 600 individual cases each year.

In 2019 and beyond we are expanding our asylum work. In nearly 80 countries, it is a crime to be LGBTQ. Being out or being outed is truly life-threatening. That’s why we work to train, represent and hold accountable the government officials who make life or death decisions for LGBTQ people seeking safety in the U.S. We are proud to do life-saving work, and with much success to be proud of, we have more energy than ever to fight the policies that hurt scores of our families.

About the Position

Immigration Equality is seeking an intern to assist the Development Department. The intern will commit to 15-20 hours per week for at least three months (start and end dates are negotiable). We accept applications on a rolling basis for spring, summer and fall internships. This opportunity is non-paid.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting prospect research on individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • A hands-on experience with the planning of organizational special events
  • Maintaining client and donor database (Salesforce), including updating records of our supporters

  • Supporting creation of Immigration Equality’s annual appeals and publications
  • Assisting in the coordination and logistics of cultivation events, panels, and trainings
  • Administrative tasks to support fundraising efforts
  • Working with select Board members, donors, corporations, and foundations, to implement their fundraising strategies
  • Tracking and evaluating all development efforts
  • Assisting staff with grant applications and writing

Development interns will gain:

  • An overview of non-profit fundraising, donor communications, and event planning
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, our client and donor database, and experience in a small, but fast-paced non-profit organization
  • An introduction to the field of LGBTQ and HIV asylum law
  • Experience in managing partnerships with various businesses and firms
