State of Latinos:
Consolidation of the Immigration Debate
A Georgetown University Event featuring Immigration Equality's Rachel Tiven
Thursday, April 29, 2010
Immigration is an issue that affects both the United States and Latin America, and that has recently become more politicized, to the point that it played a big role in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. It is important to note that the debate incorporates elements other than politics. Immigration is a very complex and sensitive subject which affects millions of people around the world every year. We usually hear about it from the media and governments, although not as often from the academic point of view.
The Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown University is partnering with Grupo Salinas and Fundacion Azteca America to keep the debate alive and approach it from a more academic perspective. This forum will incorporate some, but not all, of the factors surrounding immigration and immigration reform in the United States.
The purpose of the forum on immigration is to bring political actors, activists, academics, and other members of society to debate different approaches to the issue at hand.
