Immigration Equality is seeking a dynamic, committed individual for an internship in our Washington, DC office. This individual will help us work to promote equal immigration rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual,transgender, and HIV-positive communities.
Our interns will work as a part of the policy team to support comprehensive immigration reform and specific measures that benefit LGBT immigrants and their families. Our interns assist with background research into key districts and data analysis, as well as tracking legislative action and hearings. They will also have some administrative responsibilities, including data entry and preparation for lobby days and Hill meetings. The public policy intern can help implement the strategies they develop by attending lobbying meetings on Capitol Hill, reaching out to Congressional staff, and assisting with relevant events. Immigration Equality is a national organization that works to end discrimination in US immigration law, reduce the negative impact of that law on the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive individuals, and help obtain asylum for those persecuted in their home countries because of their sexual
orientation, transgender identity, or HIV-status. Through education, outreach, advocacy, and maintenance of a nationwide network of resources, we provide information and support to individuals affected by persecution and the discriminatory impact of our immigration system, as well as their advocates, attorneys, and Congressional representatives.
Qualifications for the Public Policy Internship include:
- Commitment to immigration rights and equality for LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants
- Excellent research, analysis, and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Attention to detail
- Willingness to be a team player
- Strong computer skills (proficiency with Excel and Salesforce is a plus)
Immigration Equality is currently unable to pay interns, but we can provide assistance with attaining course credit for eligible interns.
