Senator Leahy, change.org blog on UAFA and Immigration Equality
Senator Leahy blogged on his support for binational lesbian and gay couples last Friday after he introduced the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) of 2009:
On February 12, I was proud to reintroduce the Uniting American Families Act, which would allow U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents to petition for their foreign same-sex partners to come to the United States under our family immigration system.

Today, Change.org featured Immigration Equality and our work on the HIV travel ban, LGBT asylum, and our new transgender immigration law manual on their home page.

Lets all leave a comment on the blog and thank Senator Leahy. Remind him and other Senators and Congressmen that this is an important cause.

Senator Leahy,
Thank you so much for working on this.
My partner for 12 years has to leave America soon. My parents need me to be around to look after them and it is impossible to make a choice between them. UAFA is our only hope. Please let us know what can we do to make this pass.

An op-ed from the New York Times.

If someone from the conservative circle can accept the compromise of federally protected civil union among same-sex couple, I can’t help but feel hopeful that this is the year we will get UAFA passed and possibly more, civil union recognized at the federal level.
We may have some non-traditional allies in this cause. Let’s keep building the momentum! 2009 IS the year!

Is there any news on this proposal? I am 57 years old, a tax payer and home owner, a doctor. I have a partner of three years here on a student visa. If I was straight I could be 18 years old, never paid a dime of taxes, fall in love one night, marry the women and with the the full force of the US constitution be behind me, I could bring the women to my home as my partner. Because I am gay I am denied a fundamental right. Is there anything I can do as a citizen to help you on this? Thank you Senator for your efforts.
