Nadler reintroducing UAFA before Valentine’s Day! Urge your Rep to cosponsor!
Great News! Rep. Jerrold Nadler plans to reintroduce the Uniting American Families Act on Feb. 12!
You can make the bill a success by convincing your Representative to support the bill from Day One. Reintroducing the bill with as many cosponsors as possible will show powerful momentum for the rights of gay and lesbian binational couples!
Please call your Representative and ask them to be an original cosponsor of the “Uniting American Families Act of 2009”
It’s easy!
- Find out who your U.S. House Representative is. Go to www.congressmerge.com, enter your address, and you will be provided the name of your U.S. Representative.
- Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202)224-3121 and ask to be connected to your U.S. Representative.
- Tell your representative’s staff:
I am calling to ask Representative ________________ to be an original cosponsor of the Uniting American Families Act of 2009. To cosponsor, he/she must contact Rep. Jerrold Nadler who is the lead sponsor.
The U.S. government discriminates against gay and lesbian binational couples by not allowing us to sponsor our foreign-born life partners for immigration. Because of this, we face the terrible choice of separating from the person we love or leaving our country. As Americans, we should not have to choose between family and country. Please ask Rep. _________________ to cosponsor the Uniting American Families Act of 2009 by reaching out to Rep. Nadler before February 11.
Thanks for asking your member of Congress to celebrate love this Valentine’s Day by cosponsoring UAFA!

Awesome. Thanks IE and Rep. Nadler. That’s the second piece of good news I heard today. The other being that the 9th Circuit court basically ruled the federal DOMA unconstitutional.

If you click on http://www.immigrationequality.org/template.php?pageid=152 you can see the co-sponsors from the last Congress. Keep in mind that right now, it’s most important to focus on the people who are *on* that list. If your Member of Congress co-sponsored the bill last time, ask him or her to return as an original co-sponsor in the new Congress.

I just called my congressman’s office, Alan Grayson, to be a co-sponsor. I hope we are on our way. Is there plans to do a DC trip this year? Thank you IE for all you do!!!!

This is very pleasant news. Hopefully it will be introduced in the Senate soon. I highly doubt my congressman would ever support this much less cosponsor (but I’m contacting him anyway) but I’m hopeful senators Levin and Stabenow will cosponsor for the first time.

IE should consider a partnership with Join the Impact to rally grassroots support for UAFA. I’ve started an idea on Join the Impact for UAFA http://jointheimpact.wetpaint.com/thread/2379639/Equal+Immigration+Rig
hts+for+Same-Sex+Couples,+Support+UAFA!
If this idea gathers 100 votes, it will get its own page and members will be asked to create a task force to help make that idea a reality. Please lend us your support!!!

Marriage Equality USA wants to bring attention to the reintroduction of the UAFA during its national Freedom to Marry Day marriage counter actions by getting participants in our event to call their representatives about UAFA. Ideally, we’d like to spread the word through partners like HRC, NLCR, Join the Impact (who are already partners for the Freedom to Marry Day), Out4Immigration, and Love Exiles, plus any and all state and local LGBTQI groups willing to participate. Can Immigration Equality help MEUSA to make this a huge nationwide event? Please contact me to coordinate.

Wonderful news! My (German) partner and I are looking forward to the day when we can return to the USA. I’m forwarding this information to all my friends and family, and have my fingers crossed that we can make this happen. For some reason, I feel more hopeful about it than ever.
