Maxine Waters Cosponsors UAFA; Sits on Immigration Subcommittee

Maxine Waters (D-CA-35), has become the 121st House member to cosponsor the Uniting American Families Act in the 111th Congress.
Waters sits on the House Judiciary Committee and its Immigration Subcommittee. She brings the number of Democrats on the Immigration Subcommittee who are current UAFA cosponsors to seven out of ten, and the number of Demorcrats on the full Judiciary Committee to 18 out of 24.
UAFA has more cosponsors in the House than any other piece of immigration legislation.
Take action today to build cosponsorship for the Uniting American Families Act – tell five friends and family members to contact their members of Congress at by clicking here!

Who are the three Democrats on the Immigration Subcommittee and who are the 6 Democrats on the full Judiciary Committee that are not yet co-sponsors of the UAFA? Knowing those names would be helpful to efforts to direct efforts to mobilize specific constituencies in specific Congressional districts. Thanks for your great work.

The three members of the subcommittee who are not current cosponsors are Lofgren, Gonzalez, and Pierluisi. In addition Boucher, Watt, and Cohen of the full committee are not yet cosponsors.

What will it take to get them on board so it goes to the floor? TIME IS NOW! TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE for some of us!

So this being the case, don’t they have enough votes to actually have a vote on this to get it out of committee? Seriously, my partner and I have managed to stay here so far, but our time is up as of April 1, 2011. As it stands today, there is nothing else we can do without government intervention or miraculously winning the green card lottery. Is there any kind of timeline for this going past the “accepting co-sponsors” stage?

Good point Andy. When will this move forward? I know things like this take time, but it feels like we’ve been stuck in this one step forever.
This is all good news, so I’m hopeful this will be it for us.

The 35th district where Rep M. Waters presides is in LA (Calif). Aside from email/writing her for thanks, I will urge friends and family from LA to email/write to her and urge you all to do the same.

I am living with my partner for seven year, I am a US citizen, like my parents and ancestors. My partner is from Peru, he’s a Lawyer there, and we’re happy together, except I can’t sponsor him to stay legally here in my own country and our situation is desperate because in his illegal condition, he’s not able to find a job and I don’t want to live with him in Peru, a corrupted and homophobic country “”"the third world”"”. This is my country and we want to live here like a family, because, we’re a family. He’s very scared that any moment ICE might arrested him and face a deportation. What can I offer him? when is gonna be possible to reunited the famlies of LGTB like me? Why the discrimination against the american gays? why we can’t be like other developed countries like Canada, UK, Israel, Spain, etc. When is gonna STOP the INTOLERANCE of our politician.
I want some answer please.
Thanks!
Bobby

I see this is going very very slow, we are not even sure if we are heading to the main goal.
Gay Americans are definitely second class citizens, when you have the same duties and less rights than straight people you become a second class citizen.
I’m sick and tired of the Federal Government and its lack of balls to face the reality of the actual society. What’s the point of living of the land of “freedom” when you can’t be with the person you love?

..Bobby….you are not alone!……
and one could “write a 2,000 page debate/discussion as to why etc etc”…..
but it can be done with one word…..”Religion”!
but just know and remember you are not alone!……all the “so called” 12 million illegal immigrants are not illegal cause they wanna be….it’s because the system ‘DON’T” work!…..and then if you engage in the system….only to wait 12 to 15 or even 18 years and still nothin….so why bother to become/ do the right thing/ and engage in the system!………for what

Bobby, we agree totally. Let’s direct our frustrations and anger as energy towards effectively getting UAFA passed. Write and email…write and email…and ask all your friends and family to do the same, to their lawmakers. We are making progress with IE, so let’s keep it up!!

My partner/husband and I moved from Canada to the U.S. He got a Green Card through the visa lottery – if I had been his wife I would have been given one too. Instead we worked close to 8 years to get me a Green Card of my own. We’re both U.S. citizens now, but we went through hell to get me here.

….Daffyd…..with the greatest thought and respect to you…
I hope “NOW” that you are blessed with “utopia”…that you engage and do not sit back on your laurels, and also write and support the Cause for the rest and millions of other illegal immigrants tryin to work, gain fair n normal status..
thanx…happy that you have both attained the “goal”….

@ Derek: Excellent Point!!!
@ Daffyd: You were fortunate for a reason. Help us all now that you both have the power and tools (votes, letters, emails)….getting UAFA will just be the beginning….the struggle never ends.
